A NEW music festival at Skipton has been cancelled only hours before it was due to begin, writes Graham Chalmers.

Beacons Festival at Heslaker Farm was set to attract fans of both indie and the UK Beats scene tonight, Thursday in a new event scheduled to run until Sunday night.

Organisers said the weather forecast for dreadful weather was behind the cancellation.

They issued a staement saying: “It is with sincere regret that the organisers of Beacons Festival 2011, due to be staged at Heslaker Farm, Skipton, have had to announce its cancellation.

“Due to severe adverse weather, the event site is no longer considered to be safe for a public audience in the opinion of the authorities.”

The three-day festival’s line-up was to have included the cream of regional indie acts topped off by bigger names such as Tom Vek, Jamie-XX, Mount Kimbie, DANANANANAYROYD and Willy Mason.

The well thought-out festival, which included camping, was set up by the people behind Moor Music Festival.

They had linked up with several highly-respected arts organisations - plus indie bible Stool Pigeon who have come up with the line-up for the main stage, the first time the publication has worked with anyone in this way.

The organisers advised gig-goers to stay away from the site.

They said: “Please do not come to the site, further announcements will be made later today. Please hold on to all tickets and receipts for the time being.”
