FRINGE Crawl Day will be headlined by a true rock and pop legend in Harrogate tomorrow night, Saturday.

Harrogate International Festival Fringe’s traditional music extravaganza sees Julian Cope of Teardrop Explodes fame playing Harrogate Theatre.

It’s a very rare northern date for Cope who is making the trip exclusively for promoters Kula.

Cope is a singer, poet, occultist and photographer who has enjoyed a 30-year career in the rock business, and is described by his Bloomsbury book publishers as a ‘visionary rock musician, musicologist, and hip archaeologist.’

During that time, Cope has released over 20 solo albums, countless collaborative projects, and six acclaimed books, including his autobiography Head On and the much-lauded Krautrock Sampler and Japrocksampler.

After big hits such as Reward, Treason and Passionate Friend, the Teardrop Explodes’ four-year reign as a Top Ten chart act collapsed at the end of 1982, when Cope’s infamous love of LSD on stage proved too much for his record companies.

In the late ‘80s, however, Cope made a welcome return to the charts with the smash hit single World Shut Your Mouth, and attendant album Saint Julian which was followed in the ‘90s by such acclaimed albums as Peggy Suicide. Jehovahkill and Autogeddon.

The Modern Antiquarian, Cope’s unique guide to Britain’s megalithic culture, was published in 1998.

His most recent album with his band Black Sheep was released to great reviews, and has since formed a band of the same name.

Asides from Julian Cope, Saturday’s second annual Fringe Crawl Day also sees five town centre venues and 40-plus acts from Harrogate, Leeds and beyond, all topped off with DJ Trev’s Bottom of the Bottle rock night into the wee small hours.

Among the all-day live action will be Ryan Spendlove, (ex-Blueskins), Sketches, Oceans, Croak Ditch, Idle Maestro, Play With Fire, Dan Cope, Samantha Smith and much, much more. The seperate stages see a punk all-dayer with North Yorkshire Hard Core at Rehab, two acoustic stages at Harrogate Theatre circle bar (afternoon) and Harlow Gata (night), Monteys Rock Cafe and, of course, the Blues Bar. Entry is free at some venues.
