PLANS are already in full swing for the ninth Countryside Live, which takes place at the Great Yorkshire Showground this autumn.
Among the attractions this year will be the expanding equine section, first introduced in 2008 and now a qualifier for the mountain and moorland section at Olympia.
Organised by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, which organises the Great Yorkshire Show, Countryside Live last year enjoyed a record attendance of more than 10,000 over two days.
Show director Bill Cowling said: “Countryside Live has a different, more personal atmosphere than the Great Yorkshire Show. It’s predominantly an indoor event and though there’s lots to see and do, being more compact, it’s very easy to get around.
“The classes for cattle and sheep are always filled to capacity, which are of interest both to farmers as well as the general visitor.
“There are dozens of things for youngsters get stuck into, from tackling the climbing wall to face painting to badge making.”
The competitive classes are at the heart of the show, with judging taking place on both days, and Mr Cowling is keen to see young visitors taking part in many of the competitions.
“They are the future of the industry,” he said.
”It’s wonderful to see youngsters, some aged only eight or nine, proudly presenting their stock to the judges.”
The Search for a Talented Show Jumper competition, hosted and judged by Olympic stars Graham and Tina Fletcher, returns for a second year, while Carol and Philip Mellin, stars of the popular ITV programme The Dales, bring a new sheep dog display to the event.
There will also be a sheep fashion show featuring Nobby the Norfolk and Lenny the Lincoln Longwool on the catwalk.
For the first time, Countryside Live will host the National Apple Show alongside the existing horticultural section, organised by Knaresborough Horticultural Society.
Popular attractions including the dog agility demonstrations, Ben Potter’s birds of prey and the hands-on archery area will also be returning.
l Countryside Live takes place on Saturday, October 22 and Sunday, October 23.
