The Great North Art Show will be opened tonight, Friday by Jenny Agutter, the film and TV actress. Agutter, who is currently starring in Call the Midwife TV series on the BBC, is also a patron and trustee of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and her visit to the Private View Evening at Ripon Cathedral, which is a ticket-only affair, will benefit the charity’s work.

The cathedral is hosting the prestigious Great North Art Show from this weekend with an impressive selection of artwork by some of the UK’s finest contemporary painters, printmakers and photographers.

Artists include Claire Milner who creates glittering portraits from thousands of tiny Swarovski crystals.

Her recent celebrity commissions include a portrait for David Beckham and a large portrait of Marilyn Monroe for R&B star Rihanna, which uses 65,000 Swarovski crystals! Claire will be exhibiting a Swarovski crystal portrait of Queen Elizabeth ll created in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee, as well as other pieces of work in the stunning setting of Ripon Cathedral.

The exhibition will feature over 250 pieces of work in a broad range of styles and mediums, featuring artwork from established to emerging professional artists.

Yorkshire painter Emerson Mayes enjoys a growing reputation for his fresh, honest and uncontrived approach which is firmly grounded in the British landscape tradition. His paintings have recently been purchased by the House of Lords.

The exhibition also includes work from an exciting trio of world class photographers: Michael Dunne ex-apprentice to Cecil Beaton, Paul Berriff, known for his iconic shots of the Beatles and documentary photographer Paul Harris.
