In strictly personal terms, I’m immensely excited that Harrogate gallery RedHouse Originals is launching the first solo exhibition by Colin Wilson this weekend.

I’m immensely excited partly because he is clearlone of the most exciting and original young artists to have emerged from the UK in recent times.

But I’m also excited because Colin was born in Falkirk in Scotland, where I was also born.

The Bad & The Beautiful - A New Exhibition by Colin Wilson features feature 12 new original paintings drawing inspiration from Hollywood’s classical Film Noir period and 1940s - 50s stars of the silver screen.

They are the result of recent work at his Edinburgh studio incorporating photo-collage and paint in which the artist seems to have found the missing link between photorealism and fine art, traditional portraiture and Pop Art.

It also reminds me of the early days of Roxy Music in the 1972 when in both music, fashion and sleeve design they took a retro obsession with old Hollywood icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Humphrey Bogart and brought a futuristic sheen to them. And that’s where the smilarity ends. . .

One thing is for sure, this graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art is set to bring his own young, glamorous and rock n roll aesthetic to a gallery deeply steeped in such things.

To attend the VIP collector’s preview tomorrow, Friday at 6pm at RedHouse Originals at 15 Cheltenham Mount, email

Until January 31, 2014.
