Thirsk takes centre stage on the local racing scene on Saturday where it is Hunt Cup day.
Yorkshire trainers have won this prestigious race 11 times in the last 15 years so I’m hoping it stays in the county again this year.
Kevin Ryan only trains a few miles from the course and he could saddle Comino.
This horse is a bit of a course specialist with three of his four career wins being at the track.
Fort Bastion has moved from Ruth Carr to David O’Meara since his win in this race last year and he looks the one for the forecast.
It’s a ‘Classic’ weekend at Newmarket with the 2,000 Guineas being run on Saturday and the 1,000 Guineas on Sunday.
The Aidan O’Brien trained Gleneagles is a hot favourite for Saturday’s feature. Michael Shinners, who is the PR man for local bookies Skybet, told me in February that his firm had taken some serious money for this colt and the word from Ballydoyle was that it had wintered really well.
Despite being the most likely winner Gleneagle’s skinny price of 9/4 makes no appeal and I will take a chance with his stablemate Ol’ Man River.
On the same Newmarket card Watchable could be worth a bet in the Palace House Stakes.
David O’Meara trains this young sprinter and he could cash in by nicking a Group 3 race before the real hotshot speedsters get into action later in the season.
The Fillies are in action on Sunday and I was quite keen on Found to complete a double for O’Brien but the vibes for this horse have been awful and she may not even run.
Fellow Irish raider Legatissimo may be the answer from the David Wachman yard.
This column went close to tipping the winner of the first Flat race at Wetherby when Rousayan was agonisingly beaten by a nose.
But hopefully you were on Pipers Note who won at the juicy price of 9/1 at Ripon. Keep an eye on Richard Whittaker’s sprinter as everything went wrong on Saturday yet he still won. The Great St Wilfrid back at Ripon in August remains his major objective.
Watchable – Saturday – Newmarket 2:30pm
Ol’ Man River – Saturday – Newmarket 3:45pm
Comino – Saturday – Thirsk 4:35pm
Legatissimo – Sunday – Newmarket 3:40pm
