Ackrill Media’s racing tipster Jeff Garlick has scoured the York racecourse cards for the Dante Festival. Has he picked a winner for you?
This race is a respected trial for the Derby with three winners at York having gone on to success at Epsom in the last nine years.
During that time Aidan O’Brien has won the race three times and I expect the Irishman to make it four today with Indian Chief.
O’Brien has been winning all the recent Derby trials and this recent Leopardstown winner could be another for the Coolmore team.
The unbeaten Middleham trained Windhoek will probably try to make all, but I expect him to be picked off in the last furlong by Indian Chief.
On the same card I have heard a good word for John Gosden’s Starscope in the Middleton Stakes.
His jockey, William Buick, can also double up in the Conditions race on Sound Of Guns. Malcolm Jefferson’s top class chaser, Cape Tribulation, would be of interest in the final race but only if the rains came and he got genuine soft going.
On Friday stayers are featured in the Qipco Yorkshire Cup. This looks like being a small but select field in which Cavalryman could start a short favourite.
My best bet on Friday would be Awake My Soul who is also declared at Ripon on Sunday.
This David O’Meara trained four-year-old did this column a favour when winning at Ripon last week and he can win again at either venue.
It’s ‘Irish Day’ at Thirsk on Saturday, when there is a seven-race programme starting at 2:15pm.
The Irish-themed day will include performances by Irish dancers, a band called ‘Murphy’s Marbles’ and Irish food served in the Saddle Room buffet.
Ripon stage their annual Family meeting on Sunday starting at 2:10pm.
There is loads of entertainment for children in the course enclosure.
Children under 16 are admitted free to what is usually a brilliant, fun-packed day out.
Scarcroft trainer Richard Whitaker hopes to run his recent Doncaster winner, Love Island, at either Thirsk or Ripon over the weekend and would warrant a small bet wherever she turns up.
Racing in Yorkshire also takes place at Doncaster on Saturday night, Redcar on Monday and Pontefract on Tuesday evening.
