Harrogate’s Jamie Bonsels admits his career stands at a crossroads after bowing out in the quarter-finals of the English National Badminton Championships on Saturday.

Having negotiated the opening rounds, Bonsels made it through to the weekend’s play at stadium:mk in Milton Keynes – hosting the National Championships for the first-ever time.

However, the 24-year-old met his match in England No.3 Toby Penty, losing in straight games 21-18 21-12 at the quarter-finals stage.

And with his studies at Leeds Metropolitan University due to finish in September, Bonsels believes now is the time to start searching for other options.

“I will always come back and play but I think this was my last chance to really try and make the final. It wasn’t to be,” said the former Under-19 national champion.

“It’s getting tough for me to carry on really in terms of funding, I’m based in Leeds and not in Milton Keynes at the national badminton centre.I give it my all 100 per cent of the time but the opportunities are not so great now.

“My aim was to get to the quarter-finals and give Toby a bit of a run for his money but I couldn’t have played much better.

“Last year I got to the semis and lost to Raj, but I think my performance this year was probably better in terms of how I played over Friday and Saturday, even if the result didn’t match up.”

The season is not over for Bonsels yet however – he will be appearing at the BUCS Championships in two weeks’ time, while there are still international commitments to come.

And on reflection the former St Aidan’s High School pupil is proud to have left everything on the badminton court for more than a decade.

“I’ve played badminton for 12 years effectively and it’s been awesome,” he added.

“I’ll play in my university championships which is very important for them as they’ve supported me so much,
