Atkinson and Henderson capture singles titles

HARROGATE Racquets Club held their annual tennis club tournament recently, marking the end of the summer season and the start of winter tennis.

Nick Atkinson continued his good form in the men’s singles final, keeping control against John Hargreaves to take the title. Meanwhile, the ladies were battling it out with Frederique Brown taking an early 4-1 lead before Audrey Henderson found her form again to take the next 11 games.

Audrey was back on court with Cath Varley in the ladies doubles, against Yvonne Richards and Tracy Riddle.

The latter pair took an early 4-2 lead, but the opposition fought back to take the first set. Tracy and Yvonne were the steadier duo in the second set winning 6-3.

The third was not as close as it should have been, with Tracy and Yvonne conceding just two games. Meanwhile David Tripp and Simon Iles were having a tussle with the long standing men’s double partnership of John Hargreaves and Olli Scaife, and took the pair to 4 & 4 which was a great effort. Last but not least, Nick and Tracy put down the silverware already won to go back on court against Simon Iles and Cath Varley in the mixed.

By this time the light was fading fast, and the rain was coming down hard into the spotlights.

It really was incredibly foul weather. Nick and Tracy took the first set and looked like taking the second, but were pushed to a tiebreak, which they lost to force a third set. It was neck and neck in the third.

Tracy served well at 4-4 to take the all important 9th game, which loaded the pressure on Cath’s serve.

Unforced errors contributed to losing that service game, resulting in second titles going to Nick and Tracy

Junior coaching winter sessions are well underway. Tea, coffee and cakes served at the bar on a Friday from 3.30 onwards.
