Relegation stricken Ripon City and Boroughbridge both picked up vital draws at the weekend as the local rivals continue their fight to avoid the drop.

While Ripon were forced to come from behind against Beeston to earn a 1-1 draw, Boroughbridge were left counting the cost of conceding a last minute penalty against high-flying Horbury Town.

Daz Ekin’s side fell behind after just six minutes but a Paul Scaife free kick levelled the scores before Ross Mardon fired in from long range with two minutes left to lift the roof off Aldborough Road.

However, ecstasy soon turned to heartbreak as Town fired a stoppage time penalty past substitute goalkeeper, and former Ripon manager Alistair Hogg, leaving Boroughbridge seven points from safety.

The draw keeps Ekin’s side off the bottom of the table after Ripon’s result with their manager Steve Donoghue warning his side that the results need to come now.

He said: “If this was October I would be relatively pleased. If we had that little bit more time then I would be thinking that this is fine.

“With the performances and the draws we have been getting I would think that it would be a matter of time before we started winning but it needs to happen now.

“It’s just that extra little bit we need to get the wins but we have not got that yet. If we got that one win then we would be getting three but getting that first win is proving difficult.

“We’ve played very well in our last few games and we should have won a couple. I’m not saying we should have beat Beeston but we certainly had the chances to win.”

Beeston opened the scoring at Malorie Park on Saturday after dominating the early exchanges but Ripon settled into the game and their efforts were rewarded when James McDaid equalised before half time.

Mark Tyson pulled off a stunning save to prevent Beeston taking the lead in a second half in which Ripon failed to conjur a winning goal to put pressure on their rivals.

Ripon face a trip to Oxenhope on Saturday but will travel without in-form Duncan Terry. but Donoghue said he is hoping PhillipMyles will be back for the clash.

He said: “Duncan’s unavailable which is a shame because he’s been playing really well but I half expected it because of work but I’m hoping Phil Myles will be back from injury.

“Oxenhope might be thinking they can’t catch Leeds City or Field but there’s still a cup final to play in which always keeps a team buzzing.

“They have a lot of fixtures to catch up with but I need to make sure I have 14 players. I need all my players available because everybody will have to play there part, in the next few weeks and we need that little bit extra.”
