Leeds United may be going through their fair share of woes, but for one Wetherby footballer, the fallen giants have just made her dreams come true.

Striker Debra Slater has signed for United’s Ladies team after impressing during Wetherby Athletic’s 3-0 defeat against them in the West Riding County Cup last month.

She could make her first appearance play in front of United’s home support at Elland Road against Blackburn Rovers Ladies on April 13.

The 29-year-old started her career at York City Ladies before she moved Athletic four seasons ago to “have some fun” and “finish my playing career”.

However, she caught United’s attention after scoring 38 goals in 20 appearances this season, leading Athletic into promotion contention.

She said: “It was too good an opportunity to miss in order to test myself at a much higher level.

“I was spurred on by Ryan Giggs’ performance aged 40 against Olympiakos. I realised you’re never too old to test yourself.

“If I can make a few appearances and score a few goals before the end of the season I’ll be happy.”

Without Slater, the Tangerines finished their North East Regional Southern section season in second after sharing the spoils with Sheffield Wednesday Ladies on Sunday.

Grace Adams and Charlotte Adams were on target in a 2-2 draw against the Owls.

“This season was our most successful for the ladies as we have come such a long way,” added Slater.

“Had we not been as good as we were this season then the opportunity for a move would have never surfaced.

“Wetherby are a great club with some of the best facilities in the league. They have been really supportive.”

Boss Mike Robinson added: “It’s a fantastic honour for Debra and a fantastic honour for the club. There are not too many clubs who have players going to Leeds United.

“We always knew Debra could play at a higher level but she’s been with the club through thick and thin and this year’s been an exceptional one for the club.

“She’ll be hard to replace.”
