Wetherby Under 16 girls football team helped Doncaster Belles celebrate promotion to the Women’s Super League Division One on Sunday.

The Wetherby girls were invited along as guests of the Belles and enjoyed an evening where they performed both mascot and ball girls duties as Doncaster comfortably beat rivals Oxford 3-0.

“It was a great experience” said Wetherby vice- captain Lea Henderson.

“We led the players on to the pitch, down the players’ tunnel and took part in the Respect handshake with the teams and match officials.

“It was good fun being ball girls as well right in the thick of the action at pitch side.”

Wetherby coach Pete Hall said: “It was a great opportunity for the team and another first for Wetherby Girls football.

“The players got some first hand experience working with a fantastic team at Doncaster, definitely one for the footballing CV!”

England legend and BBC commentator Sue Smith tweeted her thanks to the Wetherby girls, who presented her with one of their Wetherby scarves.

Smith, who has 93 international caps, said: “@WbyGirlsFooty thanks for coming hope to see you on the 18th for our last game! Also thanks for the scarf.”

Doncaster Belles host Paul Edmunds added: “The Wetherby girls did their club proud on the night and we have invited them back next season when we move up to the top flight.”
