NCEL: Miller worried over Tadcaster Albion extra-time hangover

Boss Billy Miller admitted that Tadcaster Albion could have done without their extra-time exertions against Grimsby Borough on Tuesday evening.

Albion’s League Cup fourth round tie finished 1-1 at the end of normal time and they needed an Adam Baker goal in the 109th minute to progress.

Ahead of a crucial game against Cleethorpes Town in the, Miller acknowledged that although Saturday’s opponents were in action against Liversedge last night, his side could have done without extra-time.

Miller said: “We need to recover now.

“Extra-time is not really any good for us but they play tomorrow night so at least we will have played 24 hours before them.

“If Grimsby rolled over, which they didn’t by any stretch of the imagination, it gives you a false pretence so it was probably a good game for us leading into Saturday.”

After a first half almost entirely without note, it took less than a minute of the second half for the Brewers to take the lead at Bradley Road.

Skipper Jimmy Beadle slid the ball to Nick Black whose low drive crept under Scott Drury into the Grimsby net.

On the stroke of the hour mark Adam Drury deservedly brought the hosts level, arrowing a drive into the bottom left-hand corner past Gary Stevens’ dive.

With the sides still locked at 1-1, ten minutes before the end of extra-time Jason Mycoe lifted a centre to the back post which Josh Greening headed across the face of goal for Baker who nodded in the winner.

Miller underlined the difficulties posed by the NCEL Division One side.

He said: “I know they’ve had a turnover of players here and they’ve brought a lot of local lads back.

“It could have gone either way at one stage, they matched us and worked hard.”

The fourth round progression came three days after Albion left it late to score a flurry of goals past Nostell Miners Welfare and maintain their Northern Counties East League Premier Division title challenge.

For the majority of the contest, Andy Milne’s first half goal was the only thing separating the sides before late goals from Nick Black, Josh Greening (2) and Carl Stewart gave the scoreline a look of comfort.

This Saturday’s opponents Cleethorpes are third in the table, one place below Taddy, and have lost once in their last nine league outings.

In the reverse fixture in October, Marc Cooper’s goal four minutes from time condemned Albion to a defeat, one of only five losses this season.

Miller is keen to avoid conceding a double to the Owls.

He said: “They beat us when we were riding high, just after we’d gone and beaten Worksop.

“It was a difficult game- windy, horrible, a bit dull- it wasn’t the greatest spectacle but they got their goal and finished it really well.

“It sets us up for a great game. I don’t think a team has done the double over us yet, so we want to make sure it doesn't happen on Saturday.”
