Vic Craven inspired Harrogate CC back to winning ways as they saw off Castleford by five wickets in a rain-troubled clash on Saturday.

The seamer poached four wickets to disrupt the Castleford top order before his stylish 46 not out guided Harrogate to victory.

Harrogate bowled Castleford out for 136 in wet conditions as none of the away side’s batsmen past 20.

Under captain Ryan Bradshaw’s instructions, ‘Gate’s top order targeted finishing in a flourish with rain clouds swirling around.

But the gamble backfired and ’Gate slipped to 77-5 before Craven and Andy Laws (22) coasted home.

Bradshaw said: “I was scared the rain could call it off.If rain wasn’t around it would have been more comfortable.”

Harrogate were knocked out of the League Cup on Sunday by Yorkshire Academy as Knaresborough teenager Jonny Tattersall struck 85 not out.

Alexis Twigg (68) and George Ross (53) helped Harrogate to 189 but the Academy knocked it off in 37.5 overs with one wicket down.

Bradshaw’s men face last year’s third place side Barnsley this Saturday but the South Yorkshire side have gone through a transition over the winter.

Opening bowler Graham Whiles joined ’Gate from Barnsley and Bradshaw expects his paceman to have the bit between his teeth.

“Graham will want to prove a point. He’ll be desperate to make an impression,” he added.
