Wetherby has been announced as the Best Small Racecourse of 2013 in the North of England.

And it was the tenth time the racecourse has been awarded the accolade since 2000, winning last year and before that in 2010.

Wetherby Racecourse Chief Executive Jonjo Sanderson said of the news which came at the Boxing Day meeting: “We are delighted to once again receive the prestigious award of the Best Small Racecourse of the Year for the North from The Racegoers Club.

“We take great pride in this award because, principally, it is voted for by regular visitors to Wetherby, who clearly enjoy what we have on offer.

“I know that our colleague Racecourses in the North all try very hard each year to win this award, so everyone here at Wetherby is absolutely delighted to receive this accolade again, which is a great return for the effort they all put in.”

Mr Sanderson added: “They are the most dedicated and hard working group of people, always offering that little bit more than is asked of them.

“Having received this award and managed to stage a very successful William Hill Yorkshire Winter Festival last week – what a great way to end to 2013.”

The Boxing Day meeting is a major event in the Wetherby calendar but has been dogged by bad weather, although last year’s went ahead after doubts following flooding.

A bumper crowd of over 11,000 enjoyed an unseasonably sunny day of jump racing at Wetherby on Boxing Day.

Racegoers were treated to an afternoon of top class racing including an appearance by the 2013 Grand National Winner, Auroras Encore, who received a rapturous welcome from the crowd.

The Goodwin family from Yarm, Teesside had something to celebrate when Gareth Goodwin entered the racecourse as the 2013 visitor of the day.

Gareth and his wife Paula were joined by their children Alecia and Jamie along with Jamie’s girlfriend Molly, and were presented with a case of Champagne courtesy of the Racecourse.

The family are keen racegoers and have visited Wetherby many times but this was their first Boxing Day visit.

The Christmas theme continues at the course with Christmas Jumper Saturday on January 11.

Anyone wearing their Christmas jumper can get Paddock Entry on the day for just £10 per person instead of £16.

There is also a Best Turned Out Christmas Jumper Competition on the day, with a fab prize for the winner.
