A teenage girl has been arrested on suspicion of arson following a blaze at a Leeds school.
The fire at Sherburn High School happened overnight on Monday and caused extensive damage to its gym and changing rooms.
A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said today: “A teenage girl has been arrested in connection with the incident at Sherburn High School and has been released under investigation while enquires continue.”
The spokesman said the girl was arrested on Tuesday evening in Sherburn-in-Elmet.
Sherburn High was due to reopen today, with headteacher Maria Williams praising the support the school had received from the local community.
She said: “This has been a very difficult time but everybody has pulled together.
“We are looking forward to getting on with teaching and learning and with all the exciting things we have lined up for the end of term, including our theatre production and overseas residential trips.”
Police have been carrying out forensic tests and checking CCTV footage as part of their investigation into the fire.
