A new shop has been opened in Boston Spa Library to enable students over 16 to gain work experience.

Bev Rice Head of Leeds Library and Information Service and Margaret Burgess Chair of Governors of West Oaks School this week opened the new WeCanDoCo store.

WeCanDoCo is the name the students in 16+ Department at West Oaks School in Boston Spa have given to their Enterprise Company.

Following the success of their shop The Foundation in Boston Spa WeCanDoCo are now working in partnership with Leeds Libraries and Information Service in a more central location in the village.

A spokesman for WeCanDOCo said: “This exciting partnership is the first of its kind in the city and the aim is for students in 16+ to experience real life work experience placements outside of the school environment.

“The students will be working alongside the librarians learning skills which they will then put into practice for real.”

As well as library skills the students will also be selling the products they have made in their new Workshop behind the library.

The students and West Oaks also provide ICT support to a group of local “Silver Surfer” groups who are learning new computer skills in the refurbished library space.

In the workshop the WeCanDoCo group design and print images on to a range of products including mugs, water bottles, bags, money boxes, mouse mats, key rings, bookmarks and greetings cards.

A vast range of products are on sale in the library and order forms for personalised products are also available.

Currently the group are looking to expand their franchise and build on the number of different organisations they currently make products for.
