Tadcaster MP Nigel Adams recently officially opened the new multi use games area at Ulleskelf Sportsfield.

The Sportsfield Management Committee (PUSH) and the Parish Council welcomed members of the local community at the launch event where they had a look round and took part in competitions.

Neil Cowan, the chairman of the PUSH committee, said: “We are indebted to all our volunteers and funders for enabling this amazing project to be finally handed over to the residents of Ullekself and the local community.

“It was exciting to open it up on launch day and let people see the broad range of sporting activities available for all ages and abilities.

“Our MUGA will help to encourage a healthy active lifestyle as well as developing the social life in our community.”

The project began back in 2007 when a survey carried out for the Parish Plan identified a need for a range of sports activities in the village to compliment the successful football club and work started in 2011.

Debra Grace, PUSH Secretary, said: “Funds were raised locally and Sport England showed a keen interest in our application.

“A huge thanks must go to Angela Pease and Yorventure who helped us to secure match funding for the project to go ahead.

“Many local organisations donated funds including Ulleskelf Parish Council, the Sports and Social Club, UJFC and Ulleskelf Walking and Youth Club.”

The committee were also very grateful for the support from the Calcaria Lodge Freemasons, the Community Engagement Fund, Geo A Moore Foundation, Neil Hudgell Solicitors, the Yorkshire University Air Squadron and North Yorkshire Police.

After funds were gained work started to build the floodlit, all weather, multi-purpose pitch which was finally handed over to the parish council last month. Local residents will be able to play tennis, basketball, netball, 5-a-side football and practice cricket all year round.

Volunteers are now looking at the next stage which is to build a new sports pavilion on the site.
