Shops unite in fight for survival

Traders will be making a united stand in a bid to preserve Wetherby’s individuality.

After plans for new supermarkets for Sainsbury and Asda were thrown out, retailers will be joining the national Independents’ Day campaign on July 4 to promote the advantages of small shops.

Chairman of Welcome to Wetherby, set up to promote the town, Cindy Bentley said: “As a former independent trader, I know only too well how difficult it is to compete against the big boys, particularly in the current economic climate when customers are watching their pennies very carefully.

“We are very fortunate in Wetherby to have such a range of small independent shops - so many towns have lost them - and they all deserve our full support, not just on July 4th, but throughout the year.

“Without them, the town would be the poorer.

She added that many of the Independents’ Day Wetherby traders will be offering special offers and discounts for the event.

“The Welcome to Wetherby team fully supports the Independents’ Day campaign and we hope that local residents will come out in force on July 4th to support it, too,” added Mrs Bentley.

All participating shops will be displaying Independents Day posters.
