Shadwell Horticultural Society: in March the society were entertained by Martin Walker, he was guest of hHonour at the 2012 Flower show. Although Martin has retired he is working at Yorkgate for three days a week but the rest of time he is able to visit gardens at a more relaxed pace. Martin told the members about the gardens at Sissinghurst, Hidcote and Great Dixter and gave a gardener’s view of the gardens. All three gardens had what Martin called an art and craft approach, with the use of rustic brick walls, different textured pathways and varying hedges, which divided the gardens into the various themes of rose gardens, cottage garden and meadow etc. All three houses, though quite different in design, were of soft red brick and from the tower at Sissinghurst there were magnificent views of the three different gardens. Martin had lots of beautiful photographs to illustrate his talk. The AGM was also held at the March meeting and the president gave an overview of the year. The financial position was outlined and officers and committee members were elected. A ballot was held regarding the possible name change of the society in the hope of encouraging a wider range of members. The society’s forthcoming events are as follows the plant sale at the end of May, tombola shower and coffee morning on June 29. The annual flower Show will be held on August 17. Meetings of the society are held in the Methodist Church on the second Thursday in the month at 8pm. The meetings are free to members and £2 for non-members, the meetings are an opportunity to chat and access expert gardening advice.
