A Tockwith schoolgirl and running star has been nominated by her school in the hope of carrying the Olympic torch in London next year.

Stella Cross, 11, of Tockwith Primary School, who is a member of Wetherby Runners, is currently placed 10th in Great Britain for her age. Stella competes in middle distance running, which is between 800m and 3000m. The schoolgirl came first at the North Yorkshire Finals in Catterick earlier this year.

PE Teacher Julie George said: “When I began teaching Stella I had never seen a girl run so fast. She is definitely the fastest runner I have seen but she is so modest about it. I think we could very well see her competing at the Olympics. We are all very proud of Stella’s achievements and wish her well in the future.”

The nomination to carry the olympic torch, which has now closed, goes through a ballot process and then to a shortlist. Nominees will be announced In December 2011.

The Olympic flame will travel across during a 70-day relay from May 12 next year.

Stella, who is currently in year six at the school, is hoping to attend Tadcaster Grammar School in September.
