Gateways pupils have raised over £10,000 for St Gemma’s Hospice.

In September, last year’s U6 and Community Outreach prefects, Vicky Lindsay and Esther Wood returned to the Harewood-based private school to present Tara Bean, a Senior Community Fundraiser at St Gemma’s with a cheque for £10,098.68.

This was the total raised through various activities and events organised throughout the last school year, including a fashion show and long distance cycle ride.

Tara Bean said: “It is such a fantastic amount for a school to raise,

“I can’t believe how well the Community Outreach Prefects have done.

“It costs £470 to care for one patient for just one day so the money raised will pay for 21 days of care and for that I am very grateful on behalf of the patients and staff at the hospice.”

Moortown-based St Gemma’s strives to provide care and quality of life for local people with cancer and other life threatening illnesses.

Working at the heart of the community it has a large range of expert services to support patients, families and friends.

Vicky and Esther now hope to continue their charity work at university, with Esther already planning a charity fashion show at Durham.
