Andy Bell has set up a facebook page to get people to sign up to Knaresborough Wombles to help create a litter free environment.

“We are incredibly fortunate to live in a place like Knaresborough and as the weather finally improves, a few friends and I thought it would be a good idea to help make sure the enjoyment of our outdoor spaces isn’t spoiled by litter.

“We wondered if other people agreed and judging by the initial response it seems like they do.

Andy added: “The idea is that people are provided with litter pickers, gloves and bags and select a patch of the town to keep on top of the litter either during their normal walk or as a reason to get some steps in.

“Just a few minutes a week could be enough.

“It’s a good way to get kids off screens and generate pride and ownership of the local area.”

The group is getting help from Harrogate Borough Council on details like insurance requirements and how to have full bags collected.

Andy added: “In the meantime if any local businesses would like to donate litter pickers, gloves of various sizes including childrens and bio degradable bags, please find the Knaresborough Wombles Facebook group and get in touch.”

Wombles environmental groups are springing into action across the country.

Armies of volunteers can be seen picking up litter from roadside grass verges, parking and open spaces and streets.

Keep Britain Tidy is encouraging Wombles, named after the familiar litter-busting TV characters, to get to work cleaning up during the Great British Spring Clean (May 28-June 13).
