Dementia work puts carers in national finals

The Home Care Awards celebrate the best in the sector across the country, and the local company which provides care to older people in their own homes, is in the running for the Mental Health and Dementia Care Expertise Award next month.

A range of activities for existing clients and their families have been run, including an Older People’s Information Day when lockdown restrictions eased last September.

Home Instead owner Simon White said: “We were very proud to be able to run these events to help those living with dementia, provide advice to their families and loved ones, and help raise awareness of the disease.

“These events helped to complement the regular work we already do to help people live well with dementia, including our companionship cafés, dementia training and Dementia Friends sessions for the community, as well as our specialist dementia home care.

“We have big ambitions to deliver more dementia related activities in 2021 and to support older people in our community regain the confidence to partake in ‘normal’ activities following the pandemic.”

More than half of Home Instead’s clients are living with dementia, and 2020 was especially difficult for them, as many of the existing services run in the community which help those living with the disease were unable to operate throughout the pandemic.

Many older people were shielding throughout the year.
