Couple celebrate 70 years of marriage

A Wetherby couple recently celebrated their platinum wedding.

Clive, 91, and Joan Dickinson, 92, received a card from the Queen and enjoyed a special meal with their family to mark the 70 years.

The couple have lived at Anchor’s Wetherby Manor care home on St James Street for four years and were presented with flowers.

Clive and Joan, who are originally from Leeds, met in 1947 at a local youth club and married at St Peter’s Church in Hunslet in 1951.

Clive worked as a civil engineer and Joan was a secretary.

They were both members of the local golf, squash and tennis clubs and Clive also played badminton.

Clive said “We weren’t able to join as many clubs and societies as we wanted to because my business took me all over the world.”

They have three children, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and attribute “intelligence” to the success of their marriage.

Clive said: “I feel very lucky to be able to celebrate 70 years of marriage.”

The couple enjoyed a lovely day with their family who joined them for a celebratory meal in Rudding Park, near Harrogate.

Judith Scurr, Home Manager at Anchor’s Wetherby Manor said: “Clive and Joan are lovely people and we were delighted to be part of their celebrations.

“They enjoy many of the activities we organise for residents at Anchor’s Wetherby Manor.

“They love playing card games and entertainers. Clive especially enjoys golf putting, organised by the care team.”

When the couple married in 1951, the Peak District had been designated Britain’s first national park just weeks before, and the moral boosting Festival of Britain had opened.

Later that year Winston Churchill became Prime Minister again and Zebra Crossings were introduced to roads around the country.
