Milestone reached by bike recycling scheme in village

A scheme to recycle bikes has reached a milestone this week.

The Boston Big Bike Fix was launched in January this year to fix bikes and donate to people who cannot afford to buy one and this week reached 100 cycles received.

Penny Stables of organising group Boston Spa, Wetherby & Villages Community Green Group said: “We started the scheme this year, as a hub of the original project started last June in South Leeds.

“The idea is to recycle bikes, fix them up and donate them to children and adults who could not afford to buy one.

“We have an amazing group of “fixers”, who are cleaning, servicing and repairing bikes every week as volunteers.

“We have so far donated 58 bikes, mostly to inner city areas, such as Gipton, Harehills, Cross Green, Seacroft and South Leeds; but also a few to the community here.

“We would like to say a big thank you to all those who have donated bikes to the scheme, all the amazing “fixers”, the couple in Boston Spa who very kindly let us use their garage for storage.”

“We are looking to set up another hub in Wetherby, so if you know of any garage or lock up in Wetherby we could use for this fantastic project please do get in touch.

“Or if you would like to get involved in the project and join our friendly team, fixing up bikes, you would be very much appreciated.”
