Wetherby joined in the celebrations to mark the 800th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta.

People came from as far as Hereford to join in the events, which included guided tours, afternoon tea at the Bath House and a 44-minute-long peal of bells from St James, held as part of the LiberTeas drive to help people reflect on their freedom.

Welcome to Wetherby co-ordinated the town’s LiberTeas day and Chairman Cindy Bentley said: “In spite of rain, wind and biting cold weather, the church bells rang, visitors from as far afield as Hereford joined in the guided walks and then enjoyed afternoon tea and cakes in the Georgian Bathhouse, decorated with special Magna Carta posters provided by the British Library.

“Thanks to all of the volunteers who made it a successful event in spite of the weather.”
