Foodbank to hold in store collection

Wetherby Foodbank is to hold its first supermarket collection days at Tesco’s Clifton Moor Store in York this weekend.

And now the group is seeking volunteers to help hand out leaflets and talk to customers about the work of the Foodbank.

The store will provide special containers, near the entrance, for customers to make food donations from November 27 and 28.

The foodbank was set up by volunteers after an idea by Wetherby Methodist Church that there was a need in the area to supply food to needy families.

Since the first meeting in January, the group has set up a network of volunteers, warehouse and distribution centre.

It has also started helping its first clients and expects more.

Spokesman Gail Bowen said: “We have had a few, but anticipate that once we get the word out there, there will be many more.”

The Wetherby Foodbank works in association with the Trussell Trust to provide help locally.

Emergency food, of basic nuitritional value, is provided to those who have been given vouchers by official support agencies.

Anyone wishing to help with the Tesco collection should contact Wetherby and District Foodbank member Neil Wilson on 07722 563 392.
