THE last ever reunion of former shipmates from HMS Ceres in Wetherby was held at the Crown Hotel, Harrogate.

The naval training base for the supply and secretariat branch of the Royal Navy operated from 1946 to 1958.

A series of eight reunions was organised by former navy cooks Richard Knight and Vince Parks after they met up in 1999. Each reunion weekend involved a formal dinner with special guests, a coach trip on the Saturday followed by a social evening and a service in St Peter’s Church on the Sunday.

Mr Parks said: “It has been a lot of hard work over the years, but it has given us so much pleasure to have produced such memorable weekends and helped to bring friends back together again after so many years, but because of the age group, travel distances and the ever increasing costs, now is the right time to stop.”

He thanked the Crown Hotel, St Peter’s Church, the officers and ratings of the Ceres division of RNR Leeds and the Wetherby and Harrogate Royal Naval Associations for their support.

At the final reunion on the Saturday evening, both Mr Parks and Mr Knight were presented with a set of crystal cut whiskey glasses and a bottle of whiskey, along with the usual bottle of navy rum.
