Sherburn High School swimming pool is threatened with closure following the withdrawal of financial support by North Yorkshire County Council.
The chairman of the shadow governing body of Sherburn High School, Chris Lewis, says the body cannot subsidise the pool from the budget it receives from the local authority as this is intended solely for the education of students at the school.
“The pool is highly valued by the school, local primary schools and a number of community groups,” he said.
“There are compelling reasons for maintaining this facility.
“The governors are keen to consider any concrete, viable and sustainable proposals to rescue the pool.
“In an open letter, propositions for maintaining the pools as a community resource were sought.
“A number of letters and a petition of 1,077 signatures expressed support for the continuation of the pool.
“In an effort to give time to find the necessary support, governors have pledged to keep open the pool until December 31 this year.
“Meanwhile, stakeholders and representatives of community groups have been invited to a meeting at the school in order to form an action committee charged with finding sustainable funding.
“The governing body can consider the future of the pool in the knowledge that all funding options have been explored.”
