Pupil wins silver in maths contest

A Year 6 Ashville pupil has won silver in a national schools mathematics competition for the second year running.

Last November, 68,000 pupils from across the UK embarked on the Primary Maths Challenge, which encourages enthusiasm, boosts confidence and shows the different way questions can be asked.

James Shidle was one of only 3,255 to qualify for the second bonus round, and finished in the top 25 per cent, earning him a silver award in the process.

James was coached during the process by Owen Edwards, Head of Maths at Ashville.

Ashville’s Head of Prep School, Simon Bailey, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for James and is the second time in two years that he has won a silver award in this competition.

“James is a gifted mathematician and, thanks to the sessions led by Mr Owen, he has taken his level far beyond his years.”
