Traffic Constable David Minto said a BMW failed to cooperate with a request by his colleague to move off the A1 onto the hard shoulder.

Instead, the driver ran off and onto the playing fields at Grange Park, Boston Spa.

The driver was found lying on a bank near the River Wharfe, TC Minto said.

A ‘vast’ amount of cannabis was found in the car and the driver arrested for possession with intent to supply.

A search at the driver’s address found more drugs, police said.

Thousands of pounds of drugs were taken off the street, TC Minto said.

In a series of tweets, the traffic constable said: “This vehicle failed to cooperate with a request from my colleague TC Storey to leave the A1(M) The driver pulled to the hard shoulder and ran from the vehicle onto the playing fields near to #GrangePark #BostonSpa A search was commenced and assisted.

“I arrested the driver who had been lying on a bank adjacent to the River Wharfe. A vast amount of #Cannabis was located in the car and the driver arrested for PWITS. A huge thank you to @npas whose assistance was invaluable We requested that @syptweet search the driver’s address and it turns out he is a keen horticulturalist. Some excellent #teamwork yesterday and thousands of pounds worth of drugs taken off the streets.”
