FORGET the butcher’s block - it’s time to pull on the running socks for Tadcaster father-of-three, Nick Devine.
The butcher, who runs Devine Meats on Tadcaster’s Main Street, is the latest participant to sign up for the 5k boys-only R U Taking the P2? on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 19 from Rowntree Park in York.
Nick will join hundreds of other men at the charity running event being organised to help raise thousands of pounds for prostate cancer research at Yorkshire Cancer Research’s York University laboratory where drugs are being developed to halt the disease-causing effects of prostate cancer stem cells.
The 41-year-old will run the city centre race in his white butcher’s smock and green apron whilst carefully balancing a tray of his delicious meat pies.
“My sister-in-law and mother-in-law are running the Race for Life women-only 5K at York Knavesmire on the same day so I thought I would have a go at this boys-only event,” said Nick.
“It’s about time us lads had a cancer fundraising event of our own so we can get our two pennies worth too!” He added.
R U Taking the P2, in aid of Harrogate-based Yorkshire Cancer Research, has been organised for the second year running by South Bank hairdresser Brian Hughes, 57, and his friend Richard Smith, both members of York Knavesmire Harriers running club.
The route passes many interesting York sites including the famous Clifford’s Tower, which was built in 1068 by William the Conqueror and both Skeldergate and Millennium bridges.
The event starts at Rowntree Park in York at 9.30am. Run in England, Riccall Carers, North Yorkshire Athletics Network, Tesco at Askham Bar and Northern Foods have all pledged their support and there will be free water, a t-shirt and biscuits on the day.
Race entry is £14 for UK Athletic Club members or £16 for non members. Please note runners must be aged over 13 years old on run date to take part.
