A Collingham school is closed today after flash floods swamped four of its nine classrooms on last night.
Staff who live locally were called to Lady Elizabeth Hastings Primary on Thursday about 8pm to bale out classrooms that were flooded by persistent heavy rain.
Teacher Mrs Mawer said: “The rain just came down at about 7.15 for about 15 minutes and never stopped.
“I had a call to go in to the school and help.
“There are about five of us who live locally and we were getting the water out of the classrooms. The carpets were soaked.
“We were using buckets and mops and this morning we have dehumidifiers in trying to dry the classrooms out.”
Parents were notified of today’s closure by the school’s text messaging service on Thursday evening.
Meanwhile parts of York Road and Deighton Road in Wetherby were flooded but traffic was able to pass with care.
