Britannia rules the stage in Collingham Jubilee celebrations

Collingham and Harewood’s Jubilee celebrations look set to get off to a spectacular start on Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2 with the Diamond Jubilee Pageant opening with two soloists who span the decades.

Eva Ellison (88) and Charlotte Mann (nine) both of Collingham will sing Rule Britannia together at the opening of the Jubilee Musical Pageant, backed by over 300 other performers on three outdoor stages.

“I have sung all over Europe”, said Eva, “but I am so happy to be singing here with Charlotte.

“I was nine when I started singing, so it is lovely to be working together – we give each other confidence.”

ITN newsreader Duncan Wood has written and narrated the show which includes local archive photos and newsreel footage covering the last 60 years broadcast on an outdoor screen.

Backed by an 80 strong band, playing music from the last six decades, the audience are invited to a Party in the Park style event bringing picnics and joining in with the singing.

With singers, dancers and musicians ranging in age from pre-schoolers upwards the event looks set to outstrip even the last Collingham Pageant staged in 1921.

Eva added: “I don’t remember that one but I can’t wait to sing for the Jubilee.”

With the Queen’s representative, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire attending, organisers say it promises to be an event to remember.
