Action call on ‘rip-off’ energy companies by MP Dugher

A South Yorkshire MP has called for the introduction of measures to tackle ‘rip-off energy bills’ and help squeezed households facing a cost-of-living crisis.

Michael Dugher, Barnsley East Labour MP, said thousands of hard-working families in Barnsley are under ‘enormous pressure from rising prices, a flatlining economy and sky-high utility bills’.

He called for energy industry regulator Ofgem to be replaced with a tough new energy watchdog with the power to force energy suppliers to pass on price cuts when the cost of wholesale energy falls.

Mr Dugher added that firms should be required to pool the power they generate and to make it available to any retailer, opening the market and putting downward pressure on prices.
