The major internet providers are gearing up for mid-contract increases, after some prices rocketed by more than 14% in 2023.

In contrast, rural broadband provider Quickline Communications has vowed not to follow the pack and push up its prices.

Quickline, which serves hard-to-reach communities in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire with faster broadband services, has instead applauded the recent move by Ofcom to ban mid-contract price rises. The UK communications regulator made the announcement following its review of the policy.

Reassurance to keep prices down

Quickline has been championing the change to protect consumers from unfair annual cost increases. The rural provider did not raise prices during 2023 and will not do so again in 2024.

Sean Royce, CEO of Quickline Communications, said: “We wholeheartedly welcome the move by Ofcom to ban unfair mid-contract price rises, in the interests of the consumer.

“We have said for a long time now that these hikes are not fair, they are not appropriate and they are not right, more so than ever before with the cost-of-living crisis when every penny counts.

“Consumers need the reassurance that the price they sign up for is the price they will pay, in pounds and pence and for the full duration of their contract.

“Last year we reaffirmed our two-year price freeze, removing the fear of cost hikes for our customers at a time when major broadband providers significantly increased their tariffs – many by far more than inflation.

“That promise remains, with no customers to pay more than the price they agreed when they first signed their contract with Quickline.

“The announcement by Ofcom to ban inflation-linked price hikes will go some way to providing that peace of mind for millions of customers although unfortunately it won’t come in time for this April.”
