Get ready for business trips taking off again: three properties close to LBA
Flying abroad is not currently on most people’s immediate ‘to do’ list, but as more of us are vaccinated and the world opens up again, aviation is a sector that will surely – if you’ll pardon the pun – take off again.
UK air passenger numbers plummeted in 2020 by 75 per cent, with traffic at Heathrow, normally one of the world’s busiest airports, reduced to 1970s levels by the coronavirus lockdowns.
But while the sector will be one of the last to get back on its feet, there are signs that the process has started. Earlier this month, for example, Eastern Airways started flying to Newquay in Cornwall from Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA), marking the launch of the summer season.
Leeds Bradford has been as hard hit as any airport by the pandemic, but Jet2 is reporting high demand for getaways in Turkey, Cyprus and Greece, even though it won’t be flying from LBA until at least June 17.
The airport is currently awaiting a final decision on its £150m redevelopment plans. If approved, it would get a rebuilt terminal, allowing it to increase passenger numbers and, presumably, destinations.
While this would undoubtedly have environmental implications, its impact will be weighed against the benefits for business travellers, who need to travel abroad for work.
There are thousands of companies in our region that trade overseas, either importing or exporting, and businesspeople often need to travel abroad to hammer out deals, visit clients and source suppliers, so this is no small consideration.
