St John cadet named top of the North

Tadcaster Grammar School pupil and York St John Ambulance Cadet Euan Inglis has been named the charity's Deputy Regional Cadet of the Year for the North.

The 17-year-old triumphed at the national selection event held recently at Ingestre Hall in Stafford. The two-day competition saw 31 of the very best of the cadets from across the country take part in tough tasks to win one of just four regional roles.

Euan will now represent St John Ambulance Cadets in the North over the coming year.

He said: “I’m totally overwhelmed to have won the title of Deputy Regional Cadet of the Year for the North and I’m really looking forward to being part of a great team and representing all the young people in my region this year.”

St John Ambulance Cadets are aged 10 to 17 and besides first aid they learn a huge range of other important life skills as they work towards their Grand Prior award – the highest award a cadet can achieve.

Subjects range from cookery and animal welfare to sports and photography. Older cadets can put their first aid and other communication skills into practice by providing first aid to the public at events or teaching first aid to other young people and adults.

Designed to stretch the cadets’ abilities, the Cadet of the Year competition includes a wide range of subjects such as communication, team work, presentation, the media and social skills. With thousands of cadets across the country, the 31 competitors in the weekend’s contest had already shown a high degree of excellence and competition was fierce.

Simon Dunn Regional Director for St John Ambulance said: “First aid is an important skill for people of all ages to learn. Young people, like Euan, are great advocates of this message.

“St John Ambulance also provides young people with tremendous opportunities to develop a wide range of knowledge and skills in other areas and to be part of their local community.

“Euan demonstrated tremendous dedication and enthusiasm over the course of the selection weekend and we are delighted that he is representing young people who learn first aid, in the North.”
