Striding out for Cancer Research

Pupils returning to Cundall Manor after the lockdown, braved gale force winds and driving rain to raise cash for Cancer Research UK.

Youngsters as young as four, up to 13-year-olds had to walk, jog or run around a challenging course at the school near Ripon in fancy dress and some chose to run three-legged.

Louise Bessey, Assistant Head at Cundall Manor School, said: “The Race for Life is a well-established event in the school calendar.

“Obviously, this year we had to postpone the event until lockdown ended but we couldn’t return to school without having some fun and raising money for this fabulous cause.

“Over the past few years, we have raised thousands of pounds for an unbelievable charity.

“The whole school community supports the event, so it is something that really brings everyone together, all whilst raising money for a wonderful cause.”

He added: “Most of us know someone who has been affected by cancer and we all have our special reasons for taking part and wanting to help more people survive.”

To help the pupils prepare, teachers have been using specially created resources by the charity which includes everything needed to stage the event as well as top fundraising tips.

Business Manager at Cundall Manor School, Paul Swalwell, added: “The weather certainly did not deter our pupils who showed true Cundall spirit by tackling the course with the usual enthusiasm and commitment.

“The school has raised over £2,500 so far including gift aid.

“A huge thank you to everyone who has contributed to a wonderful fundraiser.”
