Sixth form life is tried out by Rossett pupils

Students at Rossett School in Harrogate tried out Sixth Form life for a day.

As they prepare to make choices about how to continue their education after GCSEs this summer, the Year 11 pupils undertook lessons from a range of 30 courses and learned about extra-curricular activities.

Brendan Foley, Director of Sixth Form, said: “Joining Rossett Sixth Form doesn’t just mean choosing new subjects for students to study.

“It is a different way of working, where students also learn to study independently and become more responsible for their own learning. In addition, they also develop a broad range of transferrable skills in preparation for university, apprenticeships or employment.

“From becoming Peer Mentors or Sixth Form Ambassadors, to playing an active role in our many enrichment opportunities such as Amnesty International and our debating club, there are a huge number of options available at Rossett. I was really impressed by the Year 11 students’ engagement on the day and their enthusiasm and excitement about what lies ahead.”

Students joining the Sixth Form from September will also have the chance to undertake an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which is being welcomed by universities. The EPQ requires students to demonstrate writing, researching, referencing and critical thinking.

Year 13 pupil Meg Terzza’s ‘horror movie’ she produced and her presentation for the EPQ was so impressive, the exam board will use it as an example for other students.
