Prep raises over £25,000

Highfield who last year won the prestigious TES award for Community Initiative of the Year, work with a range of different charities - one being the Salvation Primary School in Uganda.

Since 2014 Highfield has supported the build of Salvation Primary School, equipped the classrooms and enabled them to open fully.

Every year group at Highfield Prep and Pre-School sponsors a child in Uganda who grows up with them through to Prep 6 and recent fundraising saw an additional 22 children taking the total to over 130 children.

The children exchange letters regularly and over lockdown pupils visited their friends in their homes in Uganda via Zoom.

In normal times a team of pupils and parents visits Salvation Primary School taking a large amount of school supplies and other items that cover the school’s needs for the coming academic year.

In a year where this hasn’t been possible, Highfield families recently came together via Zoom to hold a fundraising evening which raised over £3,680 to help equip the school ready for a new school year.

Headteacher James Savile said: “We are enormously grateful to all the Highfield families who continue to give such generous support to our fundraising initiatives.

“Whilst we have missed visiting our friends in Uganda in person this year, we are really pleased to have been able to use the power of technology to not only continue our fundraising, but to visit them in their homes via Zoom.

“Where it was hailing in Harrogate it was 37 degrees in Uganda much to the surprise of all the children! Thank you to everyone who has made this phenomenal fundraising total possible.”

Principal Sylvia Brett added: “In an extraordinary year, we are incredibly pleased to be able to continue to support our chosen charities who are doing such important and vital work.

“Kindness and helping others is at the very heart of our ethos and we recognise the profoundly positive impact that being involved in fundraising and sponsorship can have on our children now, throughout their lives at school, and for many years to come.

“For Highfield to have exceeded their annual fundraising target in such an immensely challenging year is testament to the generosity and kindness of our pupils and families and we thank them all.”
