Internationally acclaimed composer, John Rutter, is coming to hear Harrogate Choral Society’s next concert.

The famous composer will hear his Requiem performed at the Royal Hall on Saturday, June 8 in a programme which also includes Karl Jenkins’ The Peacemakers.

Rutter, whose anthem This is the Day was commissioned for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011, said:”I’m delighted that the Harrogate Choral Society has chosen to perform my Requiem and I’m very much looking forward to coming to Harrogate to hear them.”

The Requiem, written in 1985 and dedicated to the memory of John Rutter’s father who had died the previous year, is one of the composer’s best-loved and most widely performed choral works.

It combines texts from the Requiem Mass and the Book of Common Prayer as well as other scriptural texts.

HCS will also be singing Karl Jenkins’ The Peacemakers, a work extolling peace and dedicated by the composer to “the memory of all those who lost their lives during armed confilict: in particular innocent civilians.”

First performed in 2012, this will be the first performance of the work in the North of England.

The soprano soloist, Hannah Kerr, will be joining the choir for both works.

Born and raised in Harrogate, Hannah she says she has “a particular passion for new music” but also sings a wide repertoire.

She completed the English National Opera’s Opera Works programme in 2011 and sang in The Nidderdale Messiah last November.

The concert, which starts at 7.30pm, will be conducted by Harrogate Choral Society’s musical director, Andrew Padmore, and will be supported by the excellent Amici Ensemble.

Tickets costing £17 to £24 are available from the Harrogate Box Office (01423 502116) or online at www.harrogatetheatre.co.uk.
