Bank holiday Monday will see gala celebrations taking place across the Harrogate district in Pannal, Starbeck and Spofforth.

The Annual Pannal Children’s Gala takes place on August 27 from 12.30pm when it will be opened by John Bickers –the Harrogate man who carried an Olympic torch in 1948 and then again this year.

One of the highlights of this year’s gala will be the official opening of the refurbished Rachel Henry Pavilion at 1.30pm in addition to the traditinal events, which include the crowning of the Gala Queen.

The fancy dress competition will be followed by children’s races and a feature unique to the gala, the Northern Region Egg Throwing Competition.

A car boot sale will also be there (entry £5 per car, £8 per van) along with a tombola, gravity boost, beat the batsman, beat the goalie, bottle stall, bar and barbecue.

In addition, bouncy castles and other stalls will provide plenty of entertainment for the whole family.

Organisers of Starbeck Gala are also preparing for a spectacular family fun day at Belmont Fields with dozens of attractions, stalls and entertainers.

The venue opens at 11am with the event being officially opened by the Mayor of Harrogate at noon.

“It’s a real family fun day,” said committee chairman Jo Nolan. “It’s a Starbeck tradition that’s been running for a long time – it wouldn’t be bank holiday Monday without the gala!”

There will be bouncy castles and donkey rides, Punch and Judy displays, go-karting, raffles and prizes. The ever popular bonny babies competition is to make a return, as will glamorous grandmas , gorgeous granddads and the knobbly knees competition.

Current Gala Queen Katie McKee, 14, will be handing over her queenship to Melissa Pearson, 16, who will be helped on the day by attendant Jade Watts, 15, also from Starbeck.

The Spofforth Gala and Trail Race will be taking place at Castle Field on August 27, from 1pm.
