Room for a Laugh - Tom Taylor on Le Tour

Comedian Tom Taylor.

Comedian Tom Taylor.

The world of Tom Taylor, promoter of Harrogate’s Sitting Room comedy club and finalist in So You Think You’re Funny contest at Edinburgh Fringe 2013.

In the preparatory months, I was somewhat sceptical about the old caravan of bicycles that rattled through town last weekend.

I am not one for jumping on bandwagons willy-nilly for fear the wagon may already be completely full and I would just bounce off the side of the vehicle and fall into the dusty verge, thrice wounded (physically, mentally and spiritually) and too weak to defend myself from the merciless attacks of an opportunistic highwayman.

I have yet to encounter a 21st century highwayman but I imagine they are more dangerous than their historical counterparts and would probably carry around a little sidekick who would film the whole sorry affair on a Smartphone.

I don’t want to become a viral hit on YouTube as a result of a misplaced bandwagon jump. That said, I was equally sceptical of air travel and putting pistachio nuts in ice cream and both those things turned out to be great.

As such, I joined many others in marvelling at just how beautiful our county is, wondering why on earth there were so many helicopter shots of Helmsley Castle and passionately shouting key phrases at the television like: “not every settlement outside of London is a village” and “the Dales and the Moors are not the same thing” and “I just don’t know how to pronounce Harewood anymore, this is like scones all over again.”

The cycling, football, tennis and motor racing have all just been tasters for *the* event of the summer: Sitting Room Comedy Club’s annual charity show. Seamless segue.

Shameless plug.

Every year we donate all the profits from one of our shows to a local charity. So not only is it another great line-up but your laughter (and your £10) will be going to a good cause.

This year, Yorkshire Cancer Research.

So, next Tuesday we welcome back Sitting Room favourite Justin Moorhouse who closed our Harrogate show in April 2013.

Justin will be a familiar face from Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, 8 Out of 10 Cats and Phoenix Nights (where he played Young Kenny) and as a live performer he is simply one of the funniest comedians in the country.

And it gets better...I’m delighted that we’ve managed to tempt ‘the Leonard Cohen of comedy’ Andrew Lawrence along to Harrogate.

Andrew’s credits are too many to mention in full but here are a few: Live at the Apollo, Stand Up for the Week, Michael McIntyre’s Roadshow, Dave’s One Night Stand, The News Quiz...he is part of the stand-up elite and I am still amazed (and incredibly excited!) that we’ve got him.

Both Justin and Andrew will be performing their new solo shows before taking them up to Edinburgh in August and Phil Ellis returns as host and guide.

I really hope you can come along, support a great charity and have a fantastic night in the process. There’s plenty of room on this wagon!

Tickets and more information for Sitting Room Comedy’s ‘Stand-Up for Charity’ show at the St George Hotel, Harrogate on Tuesday, July 15 at 8pm are available from.sittingroomcomedy.com or the St George Hotel reception.
