The Deanery Players are gearing up for their 54th annual production.

The Harrogate group will present 42nd Street at Harrogate Theatre from February 7-9.

Written for a Hollywood musical in 1933, starring Warner Baxter and Bebe Daniels, the show was based on life in the theatre during the financial depression of that time, with Ginger Rogers and Betty Grable, future stars of 1940s’ musicals, both playing minor roles.

In 1980 Gower Champion, one of the most distinguished and influential directors/choreographers of the American musical theatre, directed the stage adaptation of the 1933 film.

This was a huge success on Broadway, followed by a similar success in London’s West End. Sadly, Gower Champion died on the opening night of the Broadway production.

A musical with a book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble, lyrics by Al Dubin, and music by Harry Warren, 42nd Street boasts great tap routines, snappy dialogue and a sparkling score that includes Lullaby of Broadway, We’re In the Money, Dames and many other favourites.

The West End production opened at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on August 8, 1984.[14] The career of teenaged Catherine Zeta-Jones, a chorus member in the 1984 West End production, was launched when a vacation and an illness felled both the actress portraying Peggy Sawyer and her understudy on a night one of the producers happened to be in the audience

Tickets for The Deanery Players’ production of 42nd Street are available from Harrogate Theatre Box Office on 01423 502216 or book line at www.harrogatetheatre.co.uk
