PUPILS from Sicklinghall Primary School visited Harrogate's council chamber last week to meet a well-known local dignitary.
Mayor of Harrogate, Coun Cliff Trotter, welcomed the youngsters along and talked about his responsibility deciding council policy alongside 54 other councillors.

He answered many questions from the interested children and said he felt the best part of his job was meeting so many different people.

He also said he enjoyed visiting schools in the area, opening new school play areas and regularly meeting ladies who were celebrating their 100th birthday among other things.

The children later enjoyed a chat with the macebearers, Geoff Cadman and Alastair Findlay who explained the history of the mace and the chains of office.

The pupils were then given the opportunity to try on various robes and hats, sit in the mayoral chair and call order.
