THE hot weather was welcomed by organisers of the first Shadwell May Festival on Saturday.
Over 600 people attended the event, which was run by St Paul's Parish Church to raise its profile and show the community the worthwhile work that could be done.

David Parker, church organist at St Paul's and an organiser of the event, said: "Apart from the flower show there are no community events so this was a new venture."

Visitors were treated to music from the Harrogate Band and a performance from a troupe of drum majorettes from Hunslet, Leeds.

Just over 40 stalls were set up in Shadwell Primary School's playing field, which included every organisation in the village such as the tennis and cricket clubs, mothers union and the church itself. There were also a number of farmers market stalls.

Mr Parker said: "As well as what took place on the field the village hall was open serving tea and cakes as was the church, where there was a display of wedding dresses going back more than 50 years. The church was dressed with flowers which was absolutely wonderful.

"There was also a garden of remembrance in the church yard. A couple have been looking after it for years and it's an absolute picture so we encouraged people to have a look at it.

Mr Parker, who spent three months organising the event with church treasurer, Brian Watson, said a lot of help was received on the day.

He said: "It was a wonderful day and a great church event for the community. We are hoping it will become an annual event."
