OLYMPIC gold medallist, Darren Campbell, made an inspirational visit to Boston Spa School last Thursday.
In his role as the Youth Sport Trust’s Ambassador for Sky Living for Sport, Darren met youngsters at the school and shared his journey from a teenager growing up in inner city Manchester to Olympic success.
Darren spent time with Year 7 pupils – taking part in an indoor athletics session and activities in the fitness suite. He ended the visit by chatting to pupils about to embark on their final exams.
Darren said: “As a youngster growing up in Manchester, I know how difficult it can be to stick with school and make the most of the opportunities it gives you.
“I had to work and train very hard for many years to earn my place on the Olympic podium. I've not always stuck to the straight and narrow and that's when my school work and athletics suffered.
“It's not easy to achieve your dream but from experience I know it is worth all the hard work and dedication.
“I work with the Sky Living for Sport project so I can share some of my experiences with young people like those who attend Boston Spa School.
“I hope to help inspire them to really believe in themselves and achieve whatever they can. Taking part in sport, enjoying it and pushing yourself, even just a little, is a very powerful way to raise your confidence, self-esteem and determination to do well.”
Headteacher Chris Walsh said: “Having Darren come to Boston Spa School was a fantastic opportunity for our young people.
“His visit couldn’t have been timed better. With exams fast approaching, I am sure that our students will be inspired by the hard work and sacrifices Darren had to make along his journey to succeed - much like our students will have to make during the run up to their examinations.
“It is the opportunity for them to see first hand the personal qualities which dedication and commitment require to achieve their full potential.”
