ATTEMPTS were made to rescue a baby deer trapped on the banks of the River Wharfe at Wetherby this morning.
Wetherby police received a report of the animal trying to jump up the fast-flowing Wetherby weir at around 10.30am before it made for the adjacent bank exhausted.

Wetherby fire service was called out and two appliances arrived as two officers attempted to abseil down the bank to rescue the scared animal.

The RSPCA also attended to collect the animal which officers believed stumbled into the river from its nearby home in a field near Spofforth.

But despite, a major effort to rescue the stricken animal the RSPCA officer present decided it would be best to let the animal find its own way home as deer are good climbers.

Wetherby PCSO, Steve Wales, said: "I think the presence of the services made it even more scared. "We can't sedate it so it's been agreed to let it make its own way home," he said.
